Six days after coming out of retirement, Paul Scholes scored against Bolton Wanderers FC as Manchester United FC went joint top of the Premier League on a day when title rivals Tottenham Hotspur FC dropped points at home.

After Wayne Rooney had an early penalty saved by Adam Bogdan, Scholes (45+1) swept in his 151st goal for Sir Alex Ferguson's men, who started the day level with third-placed Tottenham and three points behind Manchester City FC. Danny Welbeck (74) and Michael Carrick (83) confirmed victory for the Red Devils.

Tottenham failed to keep pace, however. The north London club drew 1-1 with Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, who took the lead through Steve Fletcher's ninth of the campaign, only for Luka Modrić to level with a fierce drive.

Chelsea FC, in fourth, halted Sunderland AFC's revival under Martin O'Neill – Frank Lampard scoring the only goal – while Liverpool FC's indifferent home form continued as they drew 0-0 against Stoke City FC.

Elsewhere, Blackburn Rovers FC played for 67 minutes with ten men after the dismissal of Yakubu but still defeated Fulham FC 3-1 and are out of the bottom three as a result. Mid-table Norwich City FC won 2-1 at West Bromwich Albion FC, while Aston Villa FC-Everton FC finished 1-1.
