Paul Jewell: Not happy with referee's performance in defeat to Birmingham

Paul Jewell bemoaned not being awarded a late penalty which he feels cost Ipswich victory against Birmingham.

City ran out 2-1 winners with Nikola Zigic claiming a last-gasp strike to seal the triumph.Zigic opened the scoring for Birmingham before Lee Martin levelled with a brilliant strike for Ipswich.Zigic then popped to grab all three points for the Blues, but with the match at 1-1 Michael Chopra was denied a penalty, much to the chagrin of Jewell."It is very tough to take when it happens so late in the game, and then we are denied a stone-wall penalty," Jewell told Sky Sports."I have to be careful, but the fourth official said maybe the referee didn't have a good view - everyone in the ground knew it was a penalty, it wasn't even debatable and it denied us a goal."I said to the players, it is in the boxes, they have scored from two long throws, and I thought we more than matched them - the effort is there, but it is just the manner of the goals."Jewell insisted his side played well enough to win the game and would have been happy with a point, but not leaving empty handed."We played well, and we had good opportunities and situations that we didn't make the most of. We would have been happy with the draw but still thinking about three points, especially with the penalty we didn't get, it is tough to take," he said."I am sick as anyone but I will work hard to put it right."Late show"The late, late show again," said Birmingham boss Chris Hughton, who had not seen a replay of the debated penalty incident."If you score late in the game it certainly shows we've got enough character and resilience in the team that we want to protect this very good home record that we've got."We didn't play well, I think they defended very well and we had to as well on the counter-attack."I think probably over the 90 minutes we edged it, and I would think their manager (Jewell) would have said certainly they deserved to get a draw, at least."It wasn't one of our better performances."
