VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach are just four points off the Bundesliga summit following a 1-0 victory against 1. FSV Mainz 05.
Beaten at FC Augsburg last weekend, Mönchengladbach bounced back to consolidate fourth place in the standings thanks to Patrick Herrmann's fifth-minute effort. Lucien Favre's charges are now just a point shy of Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke 04, second and third respectively, heading into the winter break.
In the day's only other fixture, seventh-placed Hannover 96 were held to a 1-1 draw at 1. FC Kaiserslautern, who nevertheless remain in the relegation zone.
