Brian McDermott: Pleased after side claimed the win despite not being at their best

Reading manager Brian McDermott hailed the three points against Peterborough, whose boss Darren Ferguson thought a 3-2 defeat was unjust.

Ferguson watched Posh let an early lead slip at the Madejski Stadium as goals from Simon Church and substitutes Adam Le Fondre and Hal Robson-Kanu rendered Tommy Rowe and Emile Sinclair's efforts redundant.McDermott, while accepting his side were far from their best on the night, branded Le Fondre and Robson-Kanu as game-changers."The two subs probably changed the game for us," he said. "They came off the bench tonight to make the difference."We didn't feel we were at our best tonight but we got three points and that was what it was about."
Brian McDermottQuotes of the week"We didn't feel we were at our best tonight but we got three points and that was what it was about."I'm pleased with the result. I thought Peterborough were very good and caused us a lot of problems in the first half."We lacked a little bit of energy in the first half but we were better in the second half."You've got to credit Peterborough. I thought they were very good. Darren will be upset they've lost the game, I'm sure."They've got a side that's going to cause everyone in this division problems, there's no doubt about that."McDermott said having Wales internationals Church and Robson-Kanu find that net was apt on a night when Gary Speed was remembered with a minute's applause prior to kick-off."It seemed fitting that tonight of all nights Churchy got the first goal and Hal got the winning goal," he said."It's fitting the Welsh guys got the goals."Ferguson disappointedPosh boss Ferguson insisted his team had been in the ascendancy for much of the contest, and stressed that he was pleased with the overall performance of his players despite the defeat."(It is a) really disappointing result. I'd have been disappointed with a draw the way the game went," he said."I thought we deserved more, especially after the first half."We outnumbered them and passed the ball well and I just wanted the second goal which we didn't get."We shouldn't be talking about a defeat but we are. You can't blame the defence, the first two goals came from a striker defending - which they're not very good at."I was pleased with the performance. We needed to get back a bit of fluency in our game, which is what we've been missing in our last two games - it's been a bit of a grind."We got that tonight but Reading are a good team and they've got some good players and a very good manager."We functioned well as a team but we've lost three goals."
