Guy Poyet: Brighton manager pleased with narrow victory over Derby County
Brighton & Hove Albion manager Gus Poyet could afford a smile after Craig Mackail-Smith lived up to his pre-match prediction with a stunning strike to earn his side a 1-0 victory and send Derby County tumbling to a fifth straight defeat.
The striker ended a 10-match goal drought in style and Poyet revealed that he had forecast the frontman would win his team the points at Pride Park in the Championship clash."I had a joke with him on Monday," he said. "I told him it would be '1-0 Macka,' that sounded good and I think he liked it. Now it's the headline, 1-0 Macka!"I think it was just a matter of time (before Mackail-Smith scored). He just needed to stay calm, be in the right place and use his qualities and what a strike it was."We have been struggling in terms of proper power but we put every single body in front of the ball and blocked every shot," added Poyet."We fought for our lives and it's credit to the players."PleasedDespite another defeat, Derby manager Nigel Clough looked on the bright side and said that they played some good football against Brighton."On another night, it could have been a 3-0 or a 4-0 touch but it's indicative of the run we are in at the moment," he explained."It just won't drop for us at the moment but in terms of the performance, we are very pleased with the way we played."That's the best we have played for weeks. The game could have been over by half-time and we played some lovely football tonight."But this horrible, horrible game that we are involved in sometimes doesn't give you what you deserve and it does feel a horrible game tonight."We are just waiting for a break but we will take that performance every week from now until the end of the season."Read more http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11095/7342202/
