Giovanni Trapattoni: Has guided Ireland to their first international tournament in 10 years
Giovanni Trapattoni says leading the Republic of Ireland to Euro 2012 qualification feels like winning a trophy after his side booked a spot in next summer's tournament on Tuesday night.
The Italian coach saw his team secure a 1-1 draw with Estonia in Dublin to seal a 5-1 aggregate win in the qualifying play-off.It made for an historic night in Dublin, with the result ending Ireland's 10-year wait to reach an international tournament and their 24-year one to qualify for a European Championship.Manager Trapattoni was delighted to see his side advance and voiced his pride in achieving the feat."To qualify after 24, 25 years is like a big trophy," he told Sky Sports."Me and Marco (Tardelli, assistant coach) have built this team."For me, for us, for Marco, for all of the FAI (Football Association of Ireland), we are proud about our jobs."CarefulIreland were not able to mimic the emphatic 4-0 victory they produced in Estonia last week and Trapattoni admits he knew the Aviva Stadium clash would be more tricky."I said to the players be careful because these players are not like (the ones) we met in Estonia," he added."It was important because we wished to dedicate this victory to the supporters but in the second game it's always difficult because this team were humiliated at home."I never thought about losing the qualifier but it was also important to give our supporters a show. I think in our first 20 minutes, with Robbie Keane we had two or three great opportunities."Read more http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11095/7310722/
