Bruce expects change in luck

Steve Bruce remains confident he can turn things around at Sunderland, despite mounting pressure after defeat to Arsenal.

A 2-1 loss at Emirates Stadium came courtesy of two goals from Robin van Persie, which rendered former Gunners midfielder Sebastian Larsson's free-kick a mere souvenir. It was far from a comfortable win for Arsenal and Sunderland could have gone in at half-time with a lead had Lee Cattermole and Jack Colback not both missed good chances. But Bruce, who it has been reported could be sacked and replaced by Martin O'Neill, believes a failure to capitalise has been the story of Sunderland's poor start to the season. After suffering a fourth loss in eight games to drop to 17th position, the Black Cats boss told Sky Sports: "That is the way it has been. We have played badly, probably once, at Norwich."We haven't really got our rewards. But sometimes that is football, especially at this level.Dreadful"We have to stick with it and it'll turn, I'm sure of it."Van Persie opened the scoring in just the 29th second at Emirates Stadium before his second-half free-kick matched that of Larsson in the 31st minute for skill.Bruce was less than impressed with the way Sunderland began the game, but he was pleased with the eventual response before Van Persie stole the show."It was a dreadful start for us and it took us 20/25 minutes to get in the game," he said."Seb gave us a lifeline. But after that we had a couple of really big chances just before half-time."But, when you get that close, you have to say Van Persie has got fantastic quality and he was the difference today."
