Sir Alex Ferguson has vetoed an attempt to select Danny Welbeck for the England Under 21 squad to face Norway on Monday.
The Manchester United striker played just 14 minutes for the seniors against Montenegro on Friday night after coming on as a substitute in the 2-2 draw.U21 boss Stuart Pearce wanted to draft him into his squad for the European Championship qualifier in Norway after being left with just one fit striker. But he has revealed Ferguson knocked back his request, with the United boss wanting to keep the striker fresh for next weekend's Premier League clash with Liverpool.Pearce also tried to select Tottenham defender Kyle Walker, however, the 21-year-old, who had also been on duty with the senior squad, refused for personal reasons.UnderstoodThe U21 boss told Sky Sports News: "I spoke to Alex straight after the game."I think it was important that we got the game out of the way, the senior game, to find out who contributed within the game."I spoke with Alex and he had concerns about travelling from Montenegro and then getting on planes and coming to Oslo and I quite understood that, to be fair."I had to make the call because we have only got one striker in the squad so we had a decent chat. I thanked him for his help and consideration and we moved on from there and I quite understood his position."I spoke with (Spurs boss) Harry Redknapp on the same evening as well and he gave us his consent to take Kyle."But Kyle's girlfriend is due to have a baby very, very shortly in the next, I think, week or so and he had concerns about being away from home having been away for a week and that didn't happen."Read more http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11095_7233002,00.html
