John Terry: Will get the chance to lead England out at a major international tournament

John Terry admits England would have preferred to have qualified for Euro 2012 in style, but is happy to have got over the line.

The Three Lions stumbled their way towards next summer's European Championship with a 2-2 draw in Montenegro on Friday. They appeared to be surging towards Poland and the Ukraine at one stage, with Ashley Young and Darren Bent having put them in complete control.Fabio Capello's men shot themselves in the foot, though, as they conceded late in each half. They also saw Wayne Rooney pick up a needless red card for a petulant kick out at Miodrag Dzudovic.Asked to give his take on the game afterwards, national skipper Terry told Sky Sports: "We are a little bit disappointed. Obviously, after being 2-0 up, it's disappointing in the end to draw the game. But it's a great feat to get where we have got, we are top of the group and we have worked hard all the way through."Terry refused to condemn Rooney's actions, with England having held on to pick up the point they needed following the Manchester United striker's moment of madness.TussleHe added: "He had a little bit of a tussle, it's just one of those things. Fortunately we are through and it didn't cost us. We are happy we are through and that goes for everyone."Qualification for Euro 2012 sees Terry continue to ride a personal international rollercoaster - with the Chelsea captain having been stripped of the national armband for the 2010 World Cup, only to then be reinstated as England's on-field leader."That's been and gone and all forgotten about," he said."I will now get to captain the side in a major tournament and that's a dream of mine. I would love to go all the way so hopefully we have learnt from where we went wrong. That's not to say that it will just happen because we have learnt from our mistakes, we still need to go out there and do it because there will be a lot of good teams out there."Terry admits England have been inconsistent at times during their Euro 2012 qualification campaign, but is happy to have seen them hit their ultimate target. He said: "At times throughout a campaign you will have times where you are playing very well and you put in good performances. At other times you don't play so well and everyone jumps on your back."It's important that the players believe in themselves and the manager keeps believing. If we play the way we know we can play, we will be okay."
