Real Betis Balompié became the only Spanish club to win all four Liga matches with their 4-3 defeat of Real Zaragoza, while RCD Espanyol left it late to beat Getafe CF and, in Italy, AS Roma were stunned by a late AC Siena equaliser.
Spain
Betis returned to the Liga summit in style as summer signing Roque Santa Cruz struck twice (7, 49) either side of penalties by Salva Sevilla (12) and Etxebarria Beñat (47). However, the dismissal of Betis goalkeeper Espinosa Casto (69) prompted a late fightback by the visitors, for whom substitute Juan Carlos struck twice (77, 79), but the hosts ground out a win that takes them two points clear of Valencia CF.
Espanyol are six points off the lead, but left it late to earn their second success of the campaign. Walter Pandiani, in his second spell at the club, struck in added time to seal a 1-0 win and condemn Getafe CF to their third defeat in four outings.
Italy
Roma are without a win this season after being held to their second successive Serie A draw by Siena. Luis Enrique looked to be on course for his first victory as Giallorossi coach after Pablo Osvaldo (25) gave the hosts the lead. But Roma survived several close calls in the second half before Roberto Vitiello (88) popped up to silence the Stadio Olimpico. Like Siena and AC Milan, Enrique's charges have mustered two points from three matches.
